When we first began learning about farming, we were intrigued by the method of pasture farming. This term is used merely to describe the age old method of using only forage crops to feed animals. It can be as simple as you want, such as keeping your animals in one field that is large enough to feed them year round, or for others, a precise science involving many different factors. It can be as complicated as having many different pastures (some sowed with different crops) and then rotating animals daily if necessary through the different pastures, with different types of animals following each other.

Here at Deo Volente Farm, we practice rotational pasture farming. Animals are moved to fresh grass when needed, fields are not allowed to be overgrazed (results in weeds and bare patches), and grain is only given for training purposes to our sheep. Chickens are also supplemented with grain, but they are always located on fresh pasture
